CMCNation.com Launches (and the 5C Webscape Update)

Friday, November 7th, 2008

CMC.edu is still one of the worst, ugliest college website designs ever, so the Admission Office just launched CMCNation.com, a separately hosted website that aims to be “a gateway for prospective students to read, interact, observe and talk back to an ever-growing, ever-evolving group of current CMCers.”

Apparently a huge proportion of applicants, especially outside of the West Coast, never visit CMC before they apply, so they base their decisions on sources like Princeton Review, US News and World Report, and official school websites like cmc.edu.  Maybe CMCNation will help with the latter.  Maybe the Board of Trustees and Office of Public Affairs will realize we need to throw down a lot of cash and just make a new website.  Maybe that should be a priority.  Maybe they should stop wasting money on web design consultants and just get it done.  Maybe that should have been a priority for years…

Best of Claremont: Food

Sunday, November 2nd, 2008

My recommendations (off campus):

Best Open 24/7
Alberto’s Mexican Food– On Central Ave. just south of the I-10.

(Drive south on Central and it’ll be on your left on the first block after you pass the 10.  It’s kind of shady and I don’t know if it has a real address, but trust me, you’ll be glad you went.)

One Joe Swartley introduced me to this one– they’re open 24/7 and have amazing (and very cheap) burritos and other mexican stuff, especially appropriate for post-TNC munchies. Drive-thru or outdoor seating, which is very nice on a warm night.  Very nice people.  Get a friend to drive you there some night after Chipotle and even Dominos is closed, and you won’t regret it.  Also, I’ve never been before midnight, but it might be good during the day too?

Ludacris Concert– Frequently Asked Questions

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Here are some frequently asked questions about the Ludacris Concert.  If you have more questions, please contact Erik Hansell ‘09 or Isayas Theodros ‘10.

Will it sell out?
Last night, over 550 CMC students bought tickets and the other 4Cs have already started selling tickets (at Bridges).  There are 2450 seats in Bridges and over 5,000 students at the 5Cs (and ticket sales are open to the general public).  We expect to sell out.

Will it be lame because it’s in Bridges?
No, Bridges can get down.  Also, we’ll have a ridiculous set on stage, great opening acts, etc.  We’re pretty confident it will be amazing.

Where can CMC students buy tickets?
Buy them from Jim Nauls or someone in DOS in Heggblade for now until they sell out.  As of this writing, there are very few left for $20 with your CMC ID, limit one per ID (if your ID was used to buy one already, that’s all you can buy for $20).  Get em get em.  After the $20 tickets sell out, you can pay $45 for CMC seating at DOS, or $35 for general admission seating at Bridges Auditorium (CMC seating is the best).

Where can Pomona/Scripps/Mudd/Pitzer students buy tickets?
Buy them from Big Bridges’ Ticket Office.  Tickets will not be sold by Ticketmaster, and tickets are expected to sell out.  Get yours ASAP.  They are $35.

Update: Pomona contributes to Hyphy Party, Pitzer to Decide Today

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

The Associated Students of Pomona College (ASPC) has decided to contribute to the Hyphy Party, featuring E-40 and Dem Hoodstarz.  Students from Pomona, CMC, Mudd, and Scripps are encouraged to attend.

The Pitzer College Student Senate will decide tonight, and we’ll post that news when it becomes available.

Please see this note about Pitzer from Brian Fuerst, Social Activities Chair:

“This is not technically correct. Because of the way Pitzer’s student government works, and the rushed nature of the planning for this party, they were not able to pass a vote on it by the date of the party.

Fresh & Easy

Friday, September 19th, 2008

Another grocery shopping option has come to the Claremont area this year (or at least I never knew about it before this year). It is called Fresh & Easy and it is on Foothill in the shopping center that is at San Antonio. You basically just drive up Claremont Blvd and then make a right on Foothill and keep going until San Antonio and then you turn into the shopping center there.

The Hub Takes on Mudd Hole and Coop with Trial Hours

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

For the next month on a trial basis, The Hub is open until 1:30 AM on Fridays and Saturdays. If enough burger-eating, mozarella sticks-loving students eat at the hub during this period, the changes will be permanent.  If not, the hours will go back to usual (i.e. closed when you’re hungry, open when you’re not).  There are other changes to the hours and menu of The Hub listed below.

Hungry after the upcoming Toga Party?  Don’t want to travel to the Land of the Sagehen or Mudd Man?  Getting creeped out by that Domino’s delivery man who walks around at parties trying to sell pizzas?  Now you can go to the Hub until 1:30 AM on Fridays and Saturdays.

Over the past semester, ASCMC officials met with Pam Franco, the General Manager for Bon Appétit Catering at CMC, to work out better hours for the Hub.  This is what came of those meetings:

Q & A with Yohei Nakajima

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

The following is from an interview with Yohei Nakajima, Social Affairs Committee Chair of the ASCMC.

Yohei, last week CMC held no sponsored parties. We all understand that you need a break from throwing events and that there has been an increase in alcohol-related incidents at CMC. Is there anything else you can tell us in terms of what to expect in the future and what really happened?

Recently, the Dean of Students’ office told us there were a few issues we needed to deal with.
