Pitzer(?) and Pomona(?) Barred from E-40 and Dem Hoodstarz

By The Forum • October 22nd, 2008

UPDATE: Pitzer’s Student Senate just called ASCMC representatives to say they are still undecided about whether to contribute. If you go to Pitzer, now is the time to talk to your representatives!

Pitzer College students will unfortunately not be allowed entrance to the E-40 and Dem Hoodstarz performance at CMC’s Apartments on Saturday because their Student Senate has decided not to contribute funds to pay the performers’ fees.

Scripps, CMC, and Mudd have already chipped in, and Pomona’s ASPC Budget Committee will decide whether or not to contribute tomorrow morning. If you go to Pomona, you might want to lobby your ASPC representatives one way or the other before it’s too late!

The Ludacris concert on November 22nd will be open to all, and tickets go on sale tomorrow.

  1. Pitzer Student Says:

Damn, my school is so poor…

  2. Wish I wasn’t at pitzer… Says:

Our school isn’t poor, our student government is just retarded… PAY CMC! I WANT TO GO GET DUMBBBBBBBBBB

  3. Sagehen Says:

Agreed with Pitzer Student above– OK, why aren’t we chipping in? Our endowment could crush CMC and we can’t throw in a couple g’s to let our entire student body see the king of hyphy?

  4. CMC Athena Says:

Really, your endowment could crush CMC’s?

Although your endowment is larger (let’s remember how old your school is compared to ours), is this really the time to be doing backhanded compliments? Why don’t you use your huge endowment to buy the E-40 CD on iTunes because your student government didn’t want to donate to the cause?

  5. Wish Pitzer wasn’t stupid Says:

yeh our student senate is retarded as fuck

  6. The above comment was pretty poorly thought out Says:

    Nuff said.

  7. hiphopanonymous Says:

    cool move barring us BROS

  8. Seriously Says:

    OMG tey dd wut?

Really guys and gals? It’s a concert - it would be absolutely wonderful to have the ability to toss that money at it, and I’m sure that there’s great reason to…but isn’t it the slightest bit possible that there are better causes to divert those funds to?

I won’t say that I have great knowledge of the situation, but even without that, I feel that there are better places that this money could be used.

Luxury being available does not make luxury a necessity. Is *this* situation really that worrisome or emotionally appalling?

  9. super sick wid it Says:

wow pitzer really is goin dumb for not throwin down on e-40.
Just cuz we’re pitzer doesn’t mean we don’t like to go stoopid doo doo dumb yadidi feel me?!!!
gotta rep my hood yee yee!

  10. Your mother Says:

I would be for chipping in some money for the show…if hyphy wasn;t the stupidest excuse for a musical genre that i’ve ever heard. bitches, shut the fuck up and get on with your lives.

  11. in response to seriously Says:

better places this money could be used…..like smoking trees…….

  12. Seriously Says:

Perhaps I was wrong to assume that there’s a better use for this funding.
In one fell swoop I’ve already been proven incorrect. ;)

Let it be said that I don’t disagree with bringing entertainment to the 5Cs - I think it’s fantastic to have access to such things…However, at the same time, does it not make you question where our values lie when we’re at least relatively upset that we might not see a show coming to town?

One of the great things about these schools is that there is a great deal of affluence…Let us not have this be our greatest downfall as well.

I don’t know…as I said before, I am not well versed in the background of this situation - is this purely entertainment, or does it serve some other purpose?

For me, I would prefer to use our budget to bring in more politically, socially and culturally diverse speakers who are willing to be interactive with the student body and give them good reason to come. For all of the cross-campus hate of the whole Rove incident, I find it incredibly appealing to have our colleges bring in those of a different mindset so that we might be exposed truly to the other side (albeit that I’m not particularly in support of Rove…in any way… - Call me a hypocrite).

Yes, there is great value in having fun - I think that a wonderful aspect of college life is that it affords time to actually have good experiences. That said, there are plenty of fights to be had…why is this one so important?

  13. xoxo Says:

So can Pitzer students go to this or not? The PZ student gov is going to get a lot of heat if they don’t step it up and donate…

  14. Athena Says:

    To xoxo,

No, sory, Pitzer students can’t go to E-40 and Dem Hoodstarz, since the Pitzer student government couldn’t commit to, even retroactively, any funding.

  15. Seriously Sucks Says:

It is funny that Seriously is advocating spending more money on cultural speakers and what not, because CMC also spends by far the most on that, and the other schools never pay into that either. Plus, we have someone at CMC like everyday, and people brought to the other colleges as well. Do we really need more? How about a little entertainment for once? no harm in that. Also, if you really want “another purpose” we could say that this is a cultural event.

E40 is the biggest artist of the HYPHY movement, an important cultural phenomenon of the urban, Oakland Bay area, that I would like to learn more about, by going stupid all night tonight.

“It is funny that Seriously is advocating spending more money on cultural speakers and what not, because CMC also spends by far the most on that, and the other schools never pay into that either.” - Poster Seriously Sucks

And I don’t disagree that that’s a good thing, non? Pitzer has a good share of speakers as well - I’ve seen quite a few and I’ve truly enjoyed them.
With this being said, I put forth my full support (for as little as it’s worth) for bringing in more *interactive* speakers to Pitzer for the enjoyment of all 5Cs.

There is no doubt to me that, in an college context - in an academic context - this is of extraordinary value.

    ———-
What I’m advocating here is not diverting spending wholly from entertainment and fun, but inquiry into whether this money is really best spent in this manner. - It may well be!

I don’t mean to criticize the 5Cs for their current or past spending. What drew my attention to this whole matter is not that Pitzer was unable to come to a monetary resolution and the opportunity to see entertainment was lost - what drew my attention was the overzealous and antagonistic response that this incident incited in the student body.

In my opinion, there ARE better uses for this funding, albeit that I’m not necessarily saying that this event in particular should not have been worked into the budget. Entertainment, as I’ve said before, has great value…far greater than I could most likely convey here due to my lack of full research and information on the matter. That said, the student responses to this “lost opportunity” were (again, in my opinion) inappropriate.

I most likely should have been more specific and clear in my original statements, and should have made it explicit that I am not in full disagreement with bringing entertainment to campus…in fact, that is not what I’m getting at at all. It merely seems to me that, for on one hand, the student body is *pissed* that we are not able to see this show, and on the other, completely nonchalant about dishing out what I’d presume to be a good deal of money to see it. While it isn’t necessarily the quantity of money that’s worrisome, it’s more the notion that this money SHOULD have been spent on this show that gets me.

Again, I’m not a voice of the people, quite obviously. I’m just putting out an opinion that I would hope others would share, at least in some way.

  17. Disappointed Says:

I’m really disappointed in everyone who is talking so poorly about the Student Senate. If you don’t have the details on the issue don’t bash on those who work hard to put on events for us all year long. If you have that much of a problem with our Senate then you should go to the meetings and see what is actually going on, or better yet run or apply for Senate.

If you’re really this worked up about not being able to see E-40 that you would devote this much energy to putting people down I don’t see why you go to Pitzer.

  18. scareynoe Says:

    So we still can’t go?

  19. Josh Siegel Says:

right. read the most recent post http://thecmcforum.com/2008/10/24/uncategorized/pitzer-not-allowed-into-hyphy-party/

  20. xoxo Says:

Disappointed: Does Pitzer have an actual, concise reason for not donating? Other than this being last minute, what is the excuse?

SeriouslySucks - I completely agree with you.

People [like me] are upset and are, as you call it, “putting people down” because we see the 50,000 we give to this place being treated like pocket change.
Also - Disappointed, students often do not run for senate because they may not have time, or feel another candidate is more worthy of the position and thus vote for them, confident in their abilities to ensure needs and wants are met. From my understanding many Pitzer students want to go to this and EXPECTED the student senate to help make that happen. Is it not at all significant that Pitzer is the ONLY college here not able to attend? CMS even offered to retroactively accept funding here. I look forward to hear what Pitzer’s main concern is for not donating.

  21. Senator Palpatine Says:

As senior Galactic Senator of Naboo, I am quite displeased that the Trade Federation has enforced a blockade upon the denizens of Pitzer. Had I been elected Senator of Pitzer I would have allowed the proliferation of hyphy amongst my peoples. Good Riddance!

  22. Ross Boomer, Editor-in-Chief Says:

If you quote star wars again I’m deleting you.

  23. Hmm Says:

It sounds like many people do not have all the facts and therefore cannot jump to such conclusions such as “Pitzer senate sux” without an validity. It seems CMC senate messed up with getting ridiculously charged for an event and then expecting the other colleges to pick up the slack for them. Clearly they did not respect the Pitzer Senate protocol to submit a budget request that is then voted on by the entire council. It seems ridiculous that they made the school pay for this by not allowing its students to go.

Lastly, everyone just needs to calm down anyway and put this into perspective: It’s just a concert.

  24. E-40 Says:

The financial market is an absolute mess.
